Research Skills

My research skills come from writing books based on moving image archives, printed materials and photographic collections. My editorial work in other formats includes academic journals, online materials and DVDs. I have been a researcher and advisor on BBC4 programme on TV history and a BBCNI radio documentary. My current research involves access in Dublin to RTE's television collection on the 1966 TV production called Insurrection, a drama-doc production that re-constructed the Easter 1916 Rising.

I’m copyright and permissions trained from workshops with BUFVC and have put this to good use with clearances on recent projects with the Irish Film Institute (2014) and forthcoming (2016).

I routinely use the National Film and TV archive, London, the IFI and the National Library and Irish Film Archives in Dublin, the BBC’s collection at Caversham, the National Archive, Kew, and the British Library and its sound collection.

In addition to these skills, I have conducted interviews with media professionals and audiences as elements in my research with transcription and data analysis skills.
