At home in Richmond, London

I’m a university professor with over 25 years of research, writing and teaching experience in the UK, Ireland and worldwide. My specialism is Irish cinema, TV and cultural history, though I have taught extensively across English literature, film and media studies. I completed a five year stint of University management at St Mary’s University in 2016 and since then have fashioned a portfolio career that’s allowed me to focus on teaching, research, writing and film curating. In the past three years I have enjoyed periods as Visiting Professor in Anglophone Literatures and Cultural Studies at the University of Vienna (Spring-Summer terms 2016 and 2017) combined with being an Associate Tutor in English and Film at Birkbeck, University of London (2016/17-2018/19).This autumn also sees me teaching an adult education evening course at ICC, Hammersmith.  In 2017/18 I worked for the University of Liverpool on its MA Irish Studies programme, at its Finsbury Square, London campus, recruitment for which opens this autumn. Search the navigation tabs above for more details, especially under News.

For the academic year 2018/19 I have been conferred an Associate Research Fellowship in the School of Arts at Birkbeck, associated with the Birkbeck Institute for Moving Image (known as BIMI). [BIMI link] In addition to these roles, I work as a free-lance academic consultant, events organiser, researcher and private tutor. I continue as a consultant to the 3 year ICC Hammersmith/University of Liverpool/Institute for Irish Studies Irish Language project, based in London, which started in September 2016. I also work as a  reader for publishers in Ireland, the UK and the US.

I have a record of success in research (British Academy, Culture Ireland, AHRC, and the Irish Government's Dept of Arts, Culture and Gaeltacht), public engagement activities and collaborative projects with community, arts and national cultural organizations including curation of film festivals in UK, Brazil and Argentina, consultancy (Irish Research Council) and conference/event management (IFI, Birkbeck).  If you are looking for an independent reviewer of REF outputs, HE curriculum documents (validations), a bid writer or private tuition (e.g. A Level or I.Bacc), dissertation advice and proof-reading, please contact me for details of fees/rates. For an overview  on what I got up to in 2017/18, including public lectures and seminars, see the News section and Blog. This section also includes upcoming projects for 2018/19.
